Arts Group Boosts Patronage With Cellphone Tool

Memphis residents have a new source for information about the latest performances, exhibits, and other cultural events — their iPhones. ArtsMemphis has created an application that brings its calendar of cultural events to the popular cellphone.
From individual listings — which provide dates, ticket prices, and a description — people can contact the arts group sponsoring the event, connect to the organization’s Web site, or get directions to the venue. They can also post the information to Facebook or Twitter or write a review for an event they attended.
More than 600 people have downloaded the application since it was released in late September. It cost $10,000 to build, and ArtsMemphis plans to license the tool to arts groups in other cities. The iPhone application is part of ArtsMemphis’s effort to draw younger adults into the city’s arts scene, says Susan Schadt, the organization’s chief executive.
