Arts Groups Merge Operations

May 8, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Financial struggles are prompting arts groups to merge and form alliances at an unprecedented rate, reports The Wall Street Journal.

In recent months, at least 12 arts groups have merged operations, the newspaper said. The new alliances are making it challenging for independent groups to thrive, the Journal said, and upsetting some fans and audience members who have allegiances to specific arts groups.

Board members of nonprofit groups, as well as many foundations and management consultants, are pushing groups to merge, arguing that money to support arts groups is in tight supply and needs to be spent efficiently, the newspaper said.
