Asian-Americans Increasingly Giving to Mainstream Causes

Some charities that help poor Asian immigrants in New York City say that a growing number of successful Asian-Americans are sending their charitable donations to mainstream institutions rather than organizations whose work aids a new generation of Asian immigrants, reports The New York Times.
The article notes that no data are available to back up the concern, but philanthropy scholars say they have seen a similar pattern with Asians and other immigrant groups as they become more assimilated into the United States.
But some efforts are under way to encourage younger Asian-Americans to help needy Asians. Among them: AsianNextGen, a small group of young professionals who make donations to improve charitable services for needy Asians.
