History: Established in December 1997 by Gib Myers, a general partner at the Mayfield Fund, a venture-capital company in Menlo Park, Cal.
Purpose: To encourage start-up companies in Silicon Valley to pool their stock in a charitable fund and to help them develop a corporate-philanthropy program.
Areas of support: The organization plans to provide money and managerial resources to non-profit leaders in the San Francisco Bay Area, focusing primarily on those that have new approaches to improving education or helping young people.
Assets: The organization has raised $850,000 in stock certificates and stock options from 10 start-up companies. It has also raised $547,000 in cash and $50,000 in stock options from individuals, foundations, venture-capital companies, and other businesses.
Application procedures: The foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications.
