The Atlantic Philanthropies has appointed Gara LaMarche as its new president and chief executive officer, effective April 2007, the foundation reports. Mr. LaMarche succeeds John R. Healy, who is retiring and plans to return to his native Ireland.

Since 1996, Mr. LaMarche has been vice president and director of U.S. programs at the Open Society Institute.

The Atlantic Philanthropies plans to distribute the remainder of its $4-billion endowment and cease its grant-making activities by 2016. It has given more than $4-billion in grants since its founding in 1982.
