Author Investigates Why People Give

Mega Gifts: Who Gives Them, Who Gets Them, Second Edition, by Jerold Panas, examines what motivates donors to make a big gift to charity. Mr. Panas, who has written extensively on fund raising, says that donors don’t give for the tax deductions, or simply because they have been asked. If donors are going to ante up large gifts, they must have a passion for the charity’s mission, respect for its management, and confidence that their gift will have an impact. Chapters like “Go for the Challenge,” “Naming Opportunities Are Golden Opportunities,” “Find a Way to Recognize,” and “The Spouse Counts” describe how nonprofit groups can approach donors and appeal to their charitable impulses. Mr. Panas relied on interviews with approximately 50 donors and a survey of about 1,000 fund raisers in writing the book.
