Author Offers Practical Advice for Fund Raisers

Fundraising for the Long Haul
by Kim Klein

This book explains how small charities can integrate a comprehensive fund-raising strategy into their organizations’ operations.

Ms. Klein, a fund raiser in Berkeley, Calif., and co-publisher of Grassroots Fundraising Journal, begins with a section titled “You Can Learn From My Mistakes.” She tells the story of a donor who accused her of making him look cheap because she had readily accepted less money then he was willing to give. The lessons: Do one’s homework on the donor, and be straightforward about the amount requested.

Ms. Klein recounts other such anecdotes in sections on building an effective development office, avoiding obstacles to fund raising, and employing long-term strategies.

In the latter chapters she writes that fund raisers must be comfortable with the idea of making and spending money. Too many fund raisers view money as the root of all evil, she says, and that perspective too often translates into lost opportunities for funds.

“Our classist society will not be changed by charging too little for events or by feeling uncomfortable with offering premiums on direct-mail appeals,” she writes.
