The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas.
Education fund raising. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (Washington) has presented its 2004 CASE Commonfund Institutionally Related Foundation Awards, which honor people for their contributions to their own foundations as well as to other foundations affiliated with colleges, universities, and university systems. The recipients:
— Brad Choate, president and chief executive officer of the Minnesota Medical Foundation at the U. of Minnesota (Minneapolis), for professional leadership of a foundation with assets of $100-million or more.
— James Lanier Jr., president of the East Carolina U. Foundation (Greenville, N.C), for professional leadership of a foundation with assets of less than $100-million.
— Russell M. Robinson II, chairman of the U. of North Carolina at Charlotte Foundation, for service to institutionally related foundations.
Nonprofit enterprise. The Social Enterprise Alliance (Columbus, Ohio) has recognized six nonprofit groups for exemplary earned-income projects. Following are the recipients, which together received a total of $20,000 from the UPS Foundation (Atlanta) and an anonymous donor:
— Appalachian by Design (Lewisburg, W. Va.), which developed an artisan knitting trade that employs women who live in Appalachia.
— FareStart (Seattle), which runs four businesses to support its food-distribution program.
— MissionFish (Washington), which helps nonprofit groups receive income from sales on eBay.
— Museum of New Mexico Foundation (Santa Fe), which invests in small businesses statewide that sell crafts and food.
— Road to Responsibility (Marshfield, Mass.), which operates several small businesses that employ people with disabilities.
— Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers (Durham, N.C.), which runs several small businesses that provide job training to people in its substance-abuse program.
Women and girls. Women & Philanthropy (Washington) has named Kavita N. Ramdas, president and chief executive officer of the Global Fund for Women (San Francisco), as the recipient of its 2004 Leadership for Equity and Diversity (LEAD) Award. The award, which is accompanied by a gift of $10,000, honors grant makers for developing and supporting programs that promote equity for women and girls.
