The following awards have been presented for achievement in fund raising, management, and philanthropy:
Arts.
The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize Trust has awarded its 2001 prize for achievement in the arts to Jennifer Tipton, an adjunct professor at the Yale U. School of Drama (New Haven, Conn.). Ms. Tipton was honored for her talent in stage lighting, particularly for dance performances. The Gish Prize is awarded by a committee of arts leaders, without an application process, and carries a cash award of $250,000.
The Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington) has presented the first Lucelia Artist Award to Jorge Pardo. The award honors an American artist under the age of 50 who has produced a significant and creative body of artwork and includes a $25,000 prize.
Community development. The Fannie Mae Foundation (Washington) has announced the recipients of its 2001 James A. Johnson Community Fellows Awards, which honor urban and rural affordable-housing and community-development professionals with a grant to pursue personal and professional development goals. The fellows are: David Arizmendi, executive director of Proyecto Azteca (McAllen, Tex.); Janaka Casper, executive director of Community Housing Partnership Corporation (Christiansburg, Va.); Pete C. Garcia, president and chief executive officer of Chicanos Por la Causa (Phoenix); Francine C. Justa, executive director of Neighborhood Housing Services of NYC (New York); W. James King, executive director of Community Redevelopment Group (Cincinnati); and Christopher Kui, executive director of Asian Americans for Equality (New York). Each fellow receives a $90,000 grant, which includes a $20,000 educational-travel and study stipend.
Community leadership. The National Urban League (New York) has named Baxter International, a global medical products and services company, as the 2001 recipient of its Partnership for Opportunity Award. The award, which honors a corporate, foundation, or government-agency partnership with an Urban League affiliate, was given to the foundation for its contribution of medical and financial support to help the Pinellas County Urban League establish a mobile health-screening program in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Direct marketing. The Direct Marketing Association Nonprofit Federation (Washington) has named Special Olympics (Washington) as its 2001 Nonprofit Organization of the Year. Using a national database that consolidates its affiliates databases, the group has been able to reduce fund-raising costs while substantially increasing revenue, and allows donors to give online to any Special Olympics program worldwide.
