The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas.

Community service. Campus Compact (Providence, R.I.) has presented its Frank Newman Leadership Awards, which honor students who have demonstrated civic leadership through service and scholastic achievement, to Kendell Newman of Williams College (Williamstown, Mass.) and Eric Ross of Houston Community College. Each of the winners will receive $5,000 from Campus Compact and matching support from their university for school-related expenses or to support their community-service work.

Direct marketing. The Direct Marketing Association Nonprofit Federation (Washington) has given its 2006 Nonprofit Organization of the Year Award to the American Diabetes Association (Alexandria, Va.). The association was chosen for its success in using direct- marketing strategies to raise money, promote diabetes research, and encourage advocacy efforts.

Leadership. The National Council of Nonprofit Associations (Washington) has given Brian Magee, executive director of the Montana Nonprofit Association (Helena), its annual Phyllis Campbell Newsome Leadership Award, which recognizes a leader in the state-association network who has dedicated his or her career to the nonprofit sector.

Marketing. The Cause Marketing Forum (Rye, N.Y.) has presented its 2006 Golden Halo Awards to Home Depot (Atlanta) and Kaboom (Washington), in recognition of their outstanding cause-marketing efforts. Among other things, the two organizations are collaborating on an effort to refurbish 1,000 playgrounds in 1,000 days. In addition, the Cause Marketing Forum gave awards in several categories to honor campaigns, events, and publications through which companies, often in collaboration with nonprofit groups, carried out public-service activities. The award categories and the winning companies or products, their nonprofit partners, and their projects are listed below.


Best campaign that generates donations through consumer purchases:

— Gold: Gibson Guitar (Nashville), Guitar Center (Westlake Village, Calif.), and MusiCares (Santa Monica) for Music Rising

— Silver: Friendly Ice Cream Corporation (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Easter Seals (Chicago) for Easter Seals and Friendly’s Cones for Kids

Best health campaign:

— Gold: KitchenAid (St. Joseph, Mich.) and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (Dallas) for Cook for the Cure

— Silver: Clif Bar (Berkeley, Calif.) and the Breast Cancer Fund (San Francisco) for the Luna/Breast Cancer Fund Partnership


Best environmental or wildlife campaign:

— Gold: Iams Company (Dayton, Ohio) and Helen Woodward Animal Center (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) for the Iams Home for the Holidays project

— Silver: AT&T Corporation (San Antonio) and the National Arbor Day Foundation (Nebraska City) for the MySBC eBill Paperless Program

Best social-service or education campaign:

— Gold: Jones Apparel Group (Bristol, Pa.) and Fund for Teachers (Houston), Columbia U.’s New Teacher Academy (New York), TeachersCount (New York), and Adopt-a-Classroom (Miami) for Jones New York in the Classroom

— Silver: The History Channel (New York) and the American Association for State and Local History (Nashville) for Save Our History

Best cause-marketing event:

— Gold: Hyundai Motor America (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation (Bethesda, Md.) for Hyundai Hope on Wheels


— Silver: Cold Stone Creamery (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Make-a-Wish Foundation of America (Phoenix) for the World’s Largest Ice Cream Cake Social

Best joint-message promotion:

— Gold: Energizer Max Brand Batteries (St. Louis) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (Fairfax, Va.) for Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery

— Silver: ALDO Group (Saint Laurent, Canada) and YouthAIDS (Washington) for Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil

Best print materials:
