The following awards have been presented for work in philanthropy, volunteerism, and non-profit management:

Children. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America has presented two awards for outstanding service to young people. Ted Turner, vice chairman of Time Warner (New York), has received the Herbert Hoover Humanitarian Award, the organization’s highest honor for an individual, which was named for the U.S. President who served as the Boys & Girls Clubs’ chairman for 28 years. Through his corporate affiliations, Mr. Turner has sponsored events that benefit children and donated money to organizations that help them.

Ann M. Fudge, executive vice president at Kraft Foods (Northfield, Ill.), has received the President’s Award for service on the Board of Governors. Since becoming a member of the board in 1997, Ms. Fudge has joined the marketing committee and been instrumental in creating an alliance between the Boys & Girls Clubs and Post Cereals, a division of Kraft Foods.

Management. The Stern Family Fund has named Ami Dar, president of Aladdin Knowledge Systems (Tel Aviv), its 2000 Public Interest Pioneer. The award provides a $100,000 renewable grant to expand advocacy, career, and volunteer services at the Nonprofit Resource Center, a part of the Web site for Action Without Borders (http://www.idealist.org), which Mr. Dar founded in 1995 to encourage civic involvement around the world.

Technology. The Helsinki City Library (Finland) is the first recipient of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Access to Learning Award, recognizing practices that increase access to computers and the Internet. The award, which includes a $1-million grant, recognizes the library’s public services such as plentiful computers, some with Internet access and others equipped for English or Swedish speakers and visually impaired individuals, throughout its main, branch, institutional, and mobile divisions.
