The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas:
Leadership. The Rockefeller Foundation (New York) has announced the recipients of the inaugural Jane Jacobs Medal, which recognizes activists in New York City. The 2007 Jane Jacobs Medal for Lifetime Leadership went to Barry Benepe, co-founder of Greenmarket, which supports and organizes more than 30 farmers’ markets throughout the city. The 2007 Jane Jacobs Medal for New Ideas and Activism honored Omar Freilla, founder of Green Worker Cooperatives, which aims to create environmental jobs for residents of the Bronx. The award carries a $100,000 cash prize for each recipient.
Nonprofit management. The Alliance for Nonprofit Management (Washington) has presented its 2007 Terry McAdam Book Award for the best new book about nonprofit management to Allison H. Fine for Momentum: Igniting Social Change in the Connected Age, published by Jossey-Bass. The organization provided an honorable mention to The Community Leadership Handbook: Framing Ideas, Building Responsibilities, and Mobilizing Resources, by James F. Krile, with Gordon Curphy and Duane R. Lund, published by the Fieldstone Alliance.
Also, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement (Washington) has given its 2007 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management to the Tahirih Justice Center (Falls Church, Va.), a nonprofit group that provides pro bono legal services and public-policy advocacy on behalf of refugee women and girls. The award includes a $10,000 cash grant and a scholarship to Georgetown University’s Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Program.
Sports philanthropy. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (Princeton, N.J.) and the Sports Philanthropy Project (Bethesda, Md.) have presented the 2007 Steve Patterson Sports Philanthropy Award for Excellence in Sports Philanthropy to the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation, the nonprofit group associated with the Memphis Grizzlies professional basketball team, and the Moyer Foundation (Seattle), established by Jamie Moyer, a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies professional baseball team. The award recognized the Memphis foundation for distributing more than $20.5-million in grants and noncash support to nonprofit groups in the metropolitan Memphis area since 2001. The Moyer Foundation was honored for its efforts to raise $10-million to support more than 120 charities that help children who have emotional, financial, or physical problems. The recipients have also each received a $5,000 cash prize to advance their work.
