The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas:
Corporate giving. The Points of Light Foundation and Hands On Network (Washington) has presented its annual Awards for Excellence in Workplace Volunteer Programs, which honor companies that actively promote community service among employees. The recipients are Booz Allen Hamilton (McLean, Va.), ChoicePoint (Atlanta), Disney Worldwide Outreach (Atlanta), and Genworth Financial (Richmond, Va.).
Additionally, the Corporation for National and Community Service (Washington) presented its Spirit of Service Corporate Award to Ben & Jerry’s (Waterbury, Vt.) for its collaboration with the Dream Program (Winooski, Vt.), which connects Vermont youths with mentors.
Leadership. The National Council of Nonprofit Associations (Washington) has given Mason Hardy, president of the South Carolina Association of Nonprofit Organizations (Columbia), its annual Phyllis Campbell Newsome Leadership Award, which recognizes a leader in the state-association network who has dedicated his or her career to nonprofit work.
Marketing. The Cause Marketing Forum (Rye, N.Y.) has presented its 2007 Golden Halo Awards to the McDonald’s Corporation (Oak Brook, Ill.) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Memphis), in recognition of their outstanding cause-marketing efforts. McDonald’s was recognized for its support of the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which aims to improve the health and well-being of children around the world. St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital was honored for its annual Thanks and Giving fund-raising campaign to raise money for pediatric-cancer treatment and research.
In addition, the Cause Marketing Forum gave awards in several categories to honor campaigns, events, and publications through which companies, often in collaboration with nonprofit groups, carried out public-service activities. The award categories and the winning companies or products, their nonprofit partners, and their projects are listed below.
Best campaign to generate donations through consumer purchases:
— Gold: Sears Holding Company (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Rebuilding Together (Washington) for Heroes at Home
— Silver: Crate and Barrel (Northbrook, Ill.) and DonorsChoose.org (New York) for the Crate and Barrel Distribution of DonorsChoose.org Gift Certificates
Best health campaign:
— Gold: Procter & Gamble’s Olay (Cincinnati) and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) for Skin Cancer Takes Friends
— Silver: Supervalu/Albertsons (Eden Prairie, Minn.) for Albertsons Healthy Eaters
Best environmental or wildlife campaign:
— Gold: InterContinental Hotels Group (Atlanta) for Chase the Extraordinary
— Silver: Esurance (San Francisco) and Live Earth (Los Angeles) for Esurance — Save Our Selves
Best social-service or education campaign:
— Gold: GSN, the Network for Games (Santa Monica, Calif.) for the National Vocabulary Championship
— Silver: State Farm Insurance (Bloomington, Ill.) for the 50 Million Pound Challenge
Best cause-marketing event:
— Gold: Live Earth (Los Angeles) for Live Earth: the Concerts for a Climate in Crisis
— Silver: OfficeMax (Naperville, Ill.) and Adopt-a-Classroom (Miami) for A Day Made Better
Best joint-message promotion:
— Gold: Frito-Lay (Dallas) and the Make-a-Wish Foundation of America (Phoenix) for Destination Joy Presented by Lay’s
— Silver: Esurance (San Francisco) and Live Earth (Los Angeles) for Esurance — Save Our Selves
Best print materials:
— Gold: Target (Minneapolis), the Salvation Army (Alexandria, Va.), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Memphis) for Gifts for Greater Good
— Silver: Pedigree (Hackettstown, N.J.) for the Pedigree Adoption Drive
Best integration of national and local programs:
— Gold: ABC News Good Morning America (New York), Burlington Coat Factory (Burlington, N.J.), and One Warm Coat (San Francisco) for the Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Drive
— Silver: Hasbro (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Boundless Playgrounds (Bloomfield, Conn.) for Let’s All PlayIt Matters
Nonprofit management. The Center for Nonprofit Advancement (Washington) has given its 2008 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management to the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation, which provides tennis lessons and other educational activities for youths from low-income families. The award includes a $10,000 cash grant and a scholarship to Georgetown University’s Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate Program.
Volunteerism. The Intercollegiate Studies Institute (Cleveland) and the John Templeton Foundation (West Conshohocken, Pa.) have presented the 2008 William E. Simon Fellowship for Noble Purpose to Bryan Mauk, a recent graduate of John Carroll University (Cleveland), for his volunteer work at organizations that serve homeless people. The fellowship carries a $40,000 prize and recognizes college seniors who are dedicated to serving others.
