The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas:

Education fund raising. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (Washington) has presented its 2008 Distinguished Service Awards. The winners:

— The CASE Lifetime Achievement Award went to E. Burr Gibson, executive chair of Marts & Lundy (Lyndhurst, N.J.), who began his career in fund raising at the March of Dimes in the 1940s.

— The James L. Fisher Award for Distinguished Service to Education went to Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, for his fund-raising achievements at the New York Public Library and Brown University. He headed those institutions before assuming his current post.

— The Ernest T. Stewart Award for Alumni Volunteer Involvement went to William E. Skelton, a 1940 graduate of Virginia Tech (Blacksburg) who has organized alumni reunions, raised money to build a conference center for alumni, and served as a board member and chair of the university’s capital campaign.


— The Frank L. Ashmore Award for Service to CASE and the Advancement Profession went to April L. Harris, associate vice president for advancement at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, who has written several books and given speeches about planning special events and academic ceremonies for higher-education institutions.

— The Distinguished Friend of Education Award went to Mary Kay McPhee, a community volunteer in Kansas City, Mo., who has raised money for student scholarships and volunteered at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

Nonprofit law. The American Bar Association (Chicago) has announced the winners of its Outstanding Nonprofit Lawyer Awards. The association’s Business Law Section gives the awards annually to lawyers who have made exemplary contributions to the nonprofit world or to the development of nonprofit law. The winners:

— Outstanding Academic Award: Joel L. Fleishman, a professor of law and public-policy studies at Duke University (Durham, N.C.).

— Outstanding Attorney Award: William H. Clark Jr., a partner at the Philadelphia office of Drinker Biddle & Reath.


— Outstanding In-House Counsel Award: Brent L. Henry, vice president and general counsel at Partners HealthCare System (Boston).

— Outstanding Young Lawyer Award: Gary W. Jenkins, an assistant professor of law at Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law (Columbus).

Public service. Independent Sector (Washington) has given its 2008 John W. Gardner Leadership Award to Robert Greenstein, founder and executive director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (Washington). Mr. Greenstein was honored for his work over the past 27 years to provide accurate and fair examinations of the effects of fiscal policy on the economy and the federal budget. The award, which will be presented at Independent Sector’s conference in November, is accompanied by a $10,000 cash prize.
