The following awards have been presented for achievement in fund raising, management, research, and volunteerism:
Community service.
The McKnight Foundation (Minneapolis) has presented its 2001 Virginia McKnight Binger Awards in Human Service to 10 Minnesota volunteers. Each award carries a $7,500 prize. The recipients: Susan Baxter (Fridley), George Failes (St. Paul), Bertha Givins (St. Paul), Maria Inés Hitateguy (St. Paul), Barb King (Minneapolis), Marge Melich (St. Cloud), Kristine Reiter (Shoreview), Muriel Simmons (Minneapolis), V.J. Smith (Minneapolis), and Sang Vu (New Brighton).
Fund raising. The Indiana U. Center on Philanthropy (Indianapolis) has presented its 2001 Henry A. Rosso Medal, which honors lifetime achievement in ethical fund raising, to Frances Hesselbein, chair of the Board of Governors at the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management (New York), and to Ernestine Raclin, chairman emeritus of the board of directors at 1st Source Corporation (South Bend, Ind.) and a board member for the Indiana U. Foundation.
Medical research. Tian Xu, an associate professor of genetics at the Yale U. School of Medicine (New Haven, Conn.) and an assistant investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Chevy Chase, Md.), has received the inaugural Rothberg Award for Courage in Research from the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (New Haven). The award, which includes a $100,000 honorarium, recognizes Mr. Xu’s research findings on how tuberous sclerosis develops.
