The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas:
Fund raising. The Indiana U. Center on Philanthropy (Indianapolis) has presented the 2006 Henry A. Rosso Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Ethical Fund Raising to Dorothy A. Johnson and J. David Smith. Ms. Johnson is president emeritus of the Council of Michigan Foundations (Grand Haven, Mich.) and was honored for her service on the boards of the Corporation for National and Community Service (Washington), the Michigan Community Service Commission (Lansing), and other organizations. Mr. Smith retired as associate dean for development at the Indiana U. School of Medicine (Indianapolis) in 2005 after nearly 20 years at the institution, which raised $586-million through two capital campaigns under his leadership.
Health and human services. The National Human Services Assembly (Washington) has presented its 2006 Essence of Leadership Awards in the following categories:
— The Award for Excellence in National Board Leadership went to John Rother, chair of the Board of Directors of Generations United (Washington).
— The Award for Excellence in National Civic Leadership went to Sherry Stanley, chief executive officer of Capitol Advantage (Fairfax, Va.).
— The Award for Excellence in National Public Leadership went to Philip Mangano, executive director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (Washington).
Minorities. The National Council of La Raza (Washington) and the Annie E. Casey Foundation (Baltimore) have presented their third annual Family Strengthening Awards, which recognize organizations that help to meet the education, housing, employment, health, and advocacy needs of Hispanic-American families. Each organization will receive a $10,000 grant. The winners are American YouthWorks (Austin, Tex.), CentroNía (Washington), El Centro de la Raza (Seattle), La Casa de Esperanza (Waukesha, Wis.), and Montebello Housing Development Corporation (Montebello, Calif.)
