October 8, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

Two universities are running capital campaigns to raise more than $1-billion.

* Duke University, in Durham, N.C., plans to garner $1.5-billion by December 2002. Duke has raised $684-million for its drive since January 1996.

* Washington University, in St. Louis, plans to raise $1-billion by June 2004. It raised $541-million toward that goal from July 1995 to June 1998.

Those universities join a growing list of institutions that have either announced, increased, or surpassed campaign goals of $1-billion or more.

In the past year, Yale University and the University of Michigan completed campaigns that raised $1.7-billion and $1.5-billion, respectively. Northwestern University announced a billion-dollar drive in May. And the Johns Hopkins University, Ohio State University, and the University of Virginia all recently increased their campaign goals to $1-billion.
