Bill Lets Charity Aid Firefighters’ Families
December 12, 2006
Congress last week passed a bill allowing Central County United Way, in Hemet, Calif., to give $1-million to the families of firefighters killed during an arson fire, reports the Associated Press.
The bill allows the United Way to be excused from following federal regulations that bar tax-exempt organizations from raising money to distribute to individuals. The five firefighters were killed while battling the fire on October 26.
Similar exceptions were made after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
