Bill Would Give Calif. More Resources to Crack Down On Nonprofits

May 28, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

A California assemblyman has introduced a bill to give the state attorney general’s office more funds to clamp down on charities that violate the law, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting.

If the bill passes, some $7-million the state receives in fees that charities and professional fundraisers pay to raise money in the state would go toward enforcing state laws.

State Assemblyman Travis Allen introduced the bill, citing the America’s Worst Charities report, the culmination of a yearlong investigation by the center and the Tampa Bay Times, which found 50 charities that raised more than $1.3-billion combined but spent about $1 billion of it on consultants and fundraising instead of programs.
