Following is a summary of bills introduced in Congress that are of interest to non-profit organizations. SENATE
Cancer research. S 1598 would amend the Internal Revenue Code to give taxpayers the option of having $5 of their tax payments ($10 for married couples filing a joint return) go to the Breast and Prostate Cancer Research Fund. By Senator D’Amato (R-N.Y.).
Job training. S 1709 would authorize the Secretary of Labor to provide money to the states to distribute to non-profit groups that provide job training to welfare recipients and that help them find and keep jobs. By Senator Specter (R-Pa.).
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Food banks. H.R. 3152 would amend the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to in sure that people who volunteer at non-profit food banks and who also receive groceries from those organizations do not legally have to be classified as employees. By Representative Campbell (R-Cal.).
Telemarketing. H.R. 3134 would direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to warn the elderly of the dangers of telemarketing fraud and to provide them with information on how to avoid it. By Representative Weygand (D-R.I.) and seven others.
