The executive committee of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation approved the appointment of New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg as chairman, reports The New York Times. The full board could vote on the appointment this week.
Mr. Bloomberg gave $10-million to the fund, according to several accounts. He has been a critic of the memorial planning efforts. Earlier this year, when the estimated costs for the project spiraled up past $900-million, he called for the budget to be limited to $500-million.
Some opponents of the mayor’s involvement have already spoken up, with one saying a “fresh set of eyes” is needed to lead the process, the paper reports.
