Boeing Gives $30-Million for Air and Space Museum Expansion

April 4, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Aerospace giant Boeing is donating $30-million to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum to renovate and expand its main exhibition hall, reports USA Today.

The hall—home to Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, Chuck Yeager’s sound-barrier-breaking plane, John Glenn’s Friendship 7 capsule, and other iconic craft—has undergone little change since the museum opened in 1976. It will be partially closed during renovation project and is set to fully reopen in 2016 as the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall.

The corporate gift will also support enhanced educational programs and other exhibits at the museum on Washington’s National Mall, the second most popular Smithsonian attraction, with some 7 million annual visitors.
