Book Explores Match Between Non-Profit Groups and MBA’s

February 24, 2000 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Harvard Business School Guide to Careers in the Nonprofit Sector
By Stephanie Lowell

Geared to M.B.A. recipients, this book assesses job opportunities at non-profit organizations and profiles business graduates who chose careers in philanthropy or government.

Ms. Lowell, an associate at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, begins with an overview of non-profit employment. She provides tips on job hunting, explains what types of positions might suit people with business degrees, and weighs the risks and rewards of moving directly from graduate school to a non-profit group.

Next, Ms. Lowell analyzes the fields that make up the charitable sector, from the arts to social services, and includes a chapter on government. Sections examine trends in each field, offer testimonials from executives at non-profit groups, and explain why the holder of an M.B.A. might thrive at an organization.

For example, Ms. Lowell writes that many non-profit organizations turn to business graduates when investing money. She profiles a Harvard alumna who manages a stock portfolio for the Ford Foundation.

She concludes with a chapter listing contact information and publications for job seekers.
