Eman Desouky has joined the social-justice grant maker as program director for its Emerging LGBTQ Leaders of Color Fund.

Most recently she was director of resource mobilization at the Arab Resource and Organizing Center.

HealthWell Foundation

Michael Heimall, former CEO of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, will become CEO on November 4. The $504 million foundation gives cash grants to underinsured people to help them access health care.

Most recently he was executive director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Washington.


Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation

George Askew is stepping down after two years as president and CEO of the $211 million foundation.

Janice Thomas, chief operating officer, will serve as interim president and CEO until a successor has been named.

More New CEOs

Bianca Anderson, co-CEO of ProInspire, will become its sole CEO on December 1 when Isabelle Moses steps down as co-CEO.

Carol Ervin will be the next president and CEO of the Ada Jobs Foundation, a business-growth nonprofit in Oklahoma. Previously she was economic-development director for the Atoka City Industrial Development Authority.


Connie Fabré, president and CEO of the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, has been named president and CEO of the Louisiana Construction Education Foundation.

Julia Rugg has been promoted to CEO of Wings for Kids, an education nonprofit that focuses on social-emotional learning. She has worked there for 13 years and was most recently its chief growth officer.

Raquel Valdez Sanchez was promoted from chief operating officer to president and CEO of Business and Community Lenders of Texas, a nonprofit community development financial institution in Austin.

Shawna Walraven has been tapped as president and CEO of the Bay Area Community Foundation. She was most recently finance director, treasurer, and assistant corporate counsel for Michigan’s County of Bay. Walraven succeeds Diane Mahoney, who led the $60 million community fund in Michigan for seven years.

Other Notable Appointments

Jennifer Eccles, vice president of development and external relations at the Giant Magellan Telescope Corporation, has been appointed vice president for advancement at Harvey Mudd College.


Silvia Fuentes, director of communications at the California Community Foundation, has joined the Weingart Foundation as director of communications.

John Henry has been hired as executive vice president and chief financial officer at the United Negro College Fund. He was previously deputy chief executive officer for financial and administration at Sound Transit, in Seattle.

Lia Kampman will become vice president for institutional advancement at Elmhurst University on November 18. She is currently interim vice president for college advancement at St. Norbert College.

Anat LeonardWookey, a consultant in San Francisco, has joined the supportive-housing nonprofit LifeMoves as vice president of programs and services.

Michael Morsberger, senior vice president and leader of academic medicine practice at the consulting firm Gobel, has been named vice president for institutional advancement at the University of the Virgin Islands.

Jeff Shaw will be the next vice president for university advancement at Prairie View A&M University, effective November 1. Currently he is vice president for institutional advancement at Harris-Stowe State University.


Paulo Silva, finance manager at Unicef, is now chief financial officer at Accion, a nonprofit that uses technology to advance financial inclusion worldwide.

Alan Solano, president and CEO of the John T. Vucurevich Foundation since 2019, will become vice president of government affairs at Monument Health in January.

Kelly Finn Störmer, a strategy and growth consultant in Philadelphia, has been appointed managing director of operations and people at Exponent Philanthropy.

Departures

Jon Dunn, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties since 1993, plans to retire in July 2025.

Eric Isaacs is stepping down after six years as president of Carnegie Science. John Mulchaey, deputy for science and director and chair of the Carnegie Science Observatories, will serve as interim president until a permanent successor has been found.


Legacies

Joel Fleishman, a scholar of philanthropy and former president of the U.S. arm of the Atlantic Philanthropies, died on September 30 at age 90. He taught philanthropy, voluntarism, and nonprofit law management at Duke University for 53 years and was the founding director of its Sanford School of Public Policy. He concurrently served as president of the Atlantic Philanthropic Service Company from 1993 to 2001, helping the businessman Charles Feeney give away billions of dollars anonymously. Fleishman was also the author of The Foundation: A Great American Secret, Putting Wealth to Work, and Give Smart. Read more about Fleishman’s legacy in this 2006 profile in the Chronicle.

Martin Paley died on September 12 at age 94. A veteran nonprofit leader and consultant in California, he was the former CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, the San Francisco Library Foundation, and the Koret Foundation.
