Two brothers from Boston were sentenced to three years each in prison for attempting to bilk $2-million from the charity distributing donated funds to victims of last year’s Boston Marathon bombings, The Boston Globe writes.
Branden Mattier and Domunique Grice were found guilty last week of attempted fraud and other charges for filing a phony claim with One Fund Boston. The brothers sought compensation for a long-dead aunt whom they said had lost her legs in the April 2013 attack.
Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Locke offered the defendants a choice between serving four-and-a-half to five years in prison or three years’ incarceration followed by three years’ probation and 468 hours of community service to people suffering from loss of limbs or brain injuries, saying the latter sentence would “provide a constant reminder for three years of the population you tried to defraud.” Both men opted for the shorter jail term and service.
