Some of the leading lights of early hip-hop announced plans Wednesday for a museum devoted to the form in the Bronx, where it was born, The New York Times reports.
Afrika Bambaataa, the DJ and producer often called the godfather of hip-hop, will serve as chairman of the proposed Universal Hip Hop Museum at the Kingsbridge Armory, a long-empty Bronx building now undergoing redevelopment.
Project organizers said other Bronx hip-hop pioneers such as Grandmaster Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Grand Wizard Theodore will join Mr. Bambaataa on an advisory committee and raise funds for the museum, which they hope to open in 2017. The effort is the latest in a long line of planned museums devoted to exploring hip-hop’s history and cultural roots, including a proposed National Museum of Hip-Hop in Harlem.
