Business Practices Are Effective Tools for Nonprofit Groups

The Complete Guide to Nonprofit Management
by Smith, Bucklin & Associates

Nonprofit organizations must adopt the management practices of businesses in order to survive, the contributors to this book advise.

Explaining that “not-for-profit” does not have to mean “for-loss,” the authors, consultants at Smith, Bucklin & Associates, in New York, aim to help nonprofit leaders tailor effective business-management approaches to their organizations. For example, they recommend using communications techniques such as publicity campaigns and Internet marketing to increase public awareness and support of an organization’s cause.

The book is divided into three sections that discuss executive-management issues, program design and operation, and the day-to-day management of the organization as a whole. New to this second edition are a revised chapter on strategic planning, updated examples of successful programs, and a section on the use of information technology.

The authors assert that, ultimately, successful nonprofit organizations operate no differently from successful businesses, and that heeding such advice will benefit both large national organizations and local charities such as churches and soup kitchens.
