Cal Poly Receives $60 Million to Establish Noyce School of Applied Computing

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Robert N. Noyce Trust
$60 million to California Polytechnic State University to create the Noyce School of Applied Computing, which will unify its departments in electrical engineering, computer science and software engineering, and computer engineering, with statistics as an affiliate department. Robert Noyce was a co-founder of Intel and the inventor of the integrated circuit. He died in 1990.
Citi Foundation
$50 million to 50 nonprofit groups as the recipients of its annual Community Progress Makers program to bolster economic mobility in low-income communities.
This year, each charity has received an unrestricted grant of $1 million over three years.
Endeavour Legacy Foundation
$20 million pledge to Hampden-Sydney College to renovate its former science facility into a new building that will house its departments of Economics and Business and Government and Foreign Affairs.
Crankstart
$15.6 million pledge to Merit America to offer technology-skills training and career coaching to low-wage workers in the Bay Area area.
Leon Levy Foundation
$15 million partial challenge grant to the City University of New York Graduate Center.
The foundation gave $10 million outright to endow the Leon Levy Center for Biography, and will match up to $5 million in additional gifts to the center’s endowment.
Genentech Foundation
$14 million to San Francisco State University to expand tuition support to all undergraduate students who are participating in the university’s Genentech Foundation Scholars program, and increase research opportunities for students in its Promoting Inclusivity in Computing program.
Dollar General Literacy Foundation
$10.6 million to 1,100 adult, family, and summer literacy programs across the United States that aim to serve more than 1.4 million people.
Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
$5 million to the Genesee Intermediate School District to renovate its Summerfield Early Childhood Education Center, in Flint, Mich.
The Mott Foundation is a financial supporter of the Chronicle.
Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation
$5 million to the Cleveland Museum of Art to endow a curator of decorative arts and support their work in exhibitions, conservation, scholarship, and outreach.
Institute of International Education
$3 million to establish the Global Community for Women’s Leadership, a new program that will help recruit and retain women in professional leadership positions worldwide.
General Motors and the Chuck Lorre Family Foundation
$2 million to match gifts from other donors during Teacher Appreciation Week on DonorsChoose, a platform that enables U.S. public school teachers to request financial support for classroom supplies and resources. DonorsChoose raised $10 million over the course of the week.
General Motors pledged $1 million for science, technology, engineering, and science projects. The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation gave $1 million to coincide with the conclusion of the Young Sheldon television series this month, which Chuck Lorre created and produced.
Communities Foundation of Texas and the Dallas Foundation
$1.6 million across 41 nonprofit organizations to advance equity in historically marginalized communities in North Texas.
New Grant Opportunity
The accounting and tax firm SAX LLP is accepting nominations for its Founders’ Award, which provides unrestricted cash awards for 501(c)(3) organizations. This year, the award theme is “empowerment,” highlighting how nonprofits give those they serve the resources, skills, knowledge, and opportunities to improve their own lives. The first-place prize is a $20,000 cash award. The second-place winner will receive a video marketing package from Beard & Bowler Productions. The third-place winner will be awarded a $5,000 unrestricted cash prize, provided by Valley Bank. Nominations are due June 14.
