California’s Assembly approved legislation Thursday that would require greater donor disclosure by politically active nonprofit groups, The Sacramento Bee reports.
The measure, sponsored by state Sen. Lou Correa, sets out circumstances under which nonprofits that engage in election activity must make contributor lists public. It now goes back to the Senate for a concurrence vote. The bill contains a clause that, if enacted, would make it effective in time for the 2014 elections.
Democratic lawmakers in California have been pushing for greater transparency in nonprofit politicking since a national network of organizations channeled $11-million into two state referendum campaigns just before the 2012 election, leading to a court battle and a $1-million fine for two of the groups.
