Calif. Research Institute Gets Anonymous $275-Million Research Gift
January 29, 2014
An unidentified donor has given $275-million to the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., to speed development of treatments for cancer, diabetes, and other afflictions, U-T San Diego reports.
The gift reflects a national push by government, business, and philanthropists to support translational medicine—work that turns advances in life-science research into drugs, devices, and therapies.
“Our goal is to take those discoveries and turn them into new diagnostics and new treatments,” Kristiina Vuori, Sanford-Burnham’s president, said in announcing the donation Tuesday.
