Calif. Solicitors Kept 45% of Donations Raised for Charities

March 9, 2015

New figures from California’s attorney general show professional fundraisers earned $161.2 million working for nonprofit clients in the state in 2013, 45.5 percent of the contributions they collected, the Orange County Register writes. Commercial solicitors’ take was down from 2012, when they kept 63 percent of donated funds.

Attorney General Kamala Harris and California Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin introduced legislation last week that would crack down on solicitation firms that call themselves “fundraising counsel” rather than “commercial fundraisers.” Only the latter group is required to report financial data to the state.
