Facts & Fallacies 1999: Setting the Record Straight on California’s Nonprofit Community, by Deirdre Hennings and Florence L. Green, offers an overview of charities in California and the challenges that lie before them. The authors challenge common misperceptions about the state’s non-profit sector with statistics from organizations such as Independent Sector and the Foundation Center. Among the “fallacies” listed are that non-profit groups serve as nests for liberal spendthrifts and that tax-exempt organizations cannot lobby politicians. Ms. Hennings and Ms. Green, a freelance copywriter in Los Angeles and the executive director of the California Association of Nonprofits, respectively, foresee hurdles for non-profit organizations that do nothing to reverse declines in revenue or that don’t make full use of their rights to advocate public policies. The booklet was paid for by a grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation.
