California Clears Charities of Wrongdoing

The California State Attorney General’s office has closed an investigation into transactions among charities linked to the United Farm Workers and found no wrongdoing, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The investigation began after the newspaper wrote a series of articles detailing questionable transactions and other questionable behavior by the United Farm Workers, its affiliated charities, and the families of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, who founded the labor union.
The attorney general’s office then opened an inquiry to determine if the charities had broken charitable-trust laws through their fund raising and spending.
While the attorney general’s office found no illegal activity, it recommended that the charities “should take greater care to avoid conduct that, while it may not be unlawful, looks suspicious.”
