A Canadian transport mogul surprised new graduates of McMaster University’s medical school Friday by announcing a $46-million donation during a commencement address, The Hamilton Spectator and the CBC report.
The donation brings Michael G. DeGroote’s total giving to the Hamilton, Ontario, institution to about $115-million, including a $97-million donation to McMaster’s medical school in 2003. The university’s medical and business schools are named for Mr. DeGroote, who built his fortune with Hamilton-based Laidlaw Transport, North America’s largest school-bus operator and also a leading waste-management company.
The new gift will be used to seed work by top McMaster scientists and to establish closer ties among the medical, business, and engineering schools to groom future health-care leaders and speed advances in biomedical engineering.
