The Washington Post tracks the philanthropic habits of the 16 D.C.-area residents among the 1,645 billionaires on the latest Forbes list of the world’s richest people.
The article lists the chief causes and biggest gifts of the region’s mega-rich—among them, the heirs to the Mars candy and Marriott hotel fortunes and the owners of the Washington Nationals and Washington Redskins—as gleaned from their companies and foundations, Internal Revenue Service filings, and media reports. The newspaper also notes which of the 16 have signed the Giving Pledge.
Bill Conway, Dan D’Aniello, and David Rubenstein, co-founders of the Carlyle Group investment firm, “have become the go-to guys for public charity” in the region, the Post says. Mr. Rubinstein, a major donor to arts and historical institutions, is the sole Washingtonian on The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s most recent Philanthropy 50 list of top U.S. donors for 2013 (at No. 21), and Mr. Conway has pledged $1-billion to support job-creation efforts.
