Catholic Archdiocese Plans to Shut Many New York City Churches and Schools
March 17, 2006
Archdiocese leaders in New York have recommended that dozens of Catholic churches and schools be shut down in New York City, due to changing religious demographics, reports The New York Times.
The recommendations come as more Catholics have moved out of New York and into the suburbs.
Additionally, the archdiocese plans to open several new parishes in the Catskills to accommodate increased attendance at churches in that region.
