Catholic Charities to Help Rebuild New Orleans

April 5, 2006

A building project by Catholic Charities to add 4,000 rental homes and apartments in New Orleans would make the Archdiocese of New Orleans one of the largest landlords in the city, reports The Times-Picayune, of New Orleans.

Catholic Charities will run the nonprofit entity Providence Community Housing, which will build the homes. Jim Kelly, Catholic Charities’ executive director, said rebuilding New Orleans should “give all of the people the opportunity to come home,” the paper reports. Church property will be used, and the organization is seeking some of the $65-million in low-income housing tax credits available in Louisiana this year.
