Celebrity Charity Auctions Gain New Life on Internet

September 6, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Internet has given new life to auctions that sell celebrity-owned or -autographed items to raise money for charity, reports The New York Times.

Since 2000, more than $81-million has been raised for charity on the online auction site eBay, and the company is planning to facilitate more fund-raising efforts, the newspaper says.

Under a policy effective October 1, eBay will return to sellers a portion of the fee it charges them if they donate part of their sale to charity. For example, if a seller promises to give 30 percent of a sale’s revenue to charity, eBay will return 30 percent of the fee. (Nonprofit groups selling items on eBay pay no basic fees.)

From glitzy to garage sale, online auctions have netted big returns for many charities, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports.
