Central African Republic Hospital Attack Kills 3 Aid Workers

April 29, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

At least 16 people, including three health workers for global medical charity Doctors Without Borders, were killed over the weekend when heavily armed Islamic militants stormed a hospital in Central African Republic, the Associated Press reports.

Dozens of gunmen opened fire at the compound in the city of Boguila in the country’s northwest as Doctors Without Borders staffers were meeting with community leaders. The assault marked the first time the charity has lost workers in Central African Republic since sectarian violence broke out in December.

The charity, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres or MSF, is the only international aid group working in much of Central African Republic. Stefano Argenziano, the head of MSF in the country, said that in the wake of the deaths the organization will suspend its activities in Boguila, where it has operated since 2006.
