Century-Old Green Bay Symphony Orchestra to Shut Down

May 6, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Citing persistent budget shortfalls and shrinking donations and ticket revenue, the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra has announced that its forthcoming season will be its last, writes the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

“It was a very difficult decision to make. However, we cannot continue offering high-quality, professional performances not knowing from concert to concert if we’ll be able to cover our costs,” Dan Linssen, the organization’s executive director, said in a statement Friday.

The orchestra, founded in 1913 as the Green Bay Symphony, has run annual deficits amounting to 5 percent to 10 percent of its $500,000-$600,000 budget, according to Mr. Linssen. The symphony will shut down next year after a five-performance farewell season.
