Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Awards $68 Million to Map Human Cells (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

$68 million to the Human Cell Atlas, a collaborative research effort involving scientists, computational biologists, software engineers, and medical doctors working together to map every cell in the human body.

Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation

$30 million to the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, and the University of California at San Francisco to support the three Broad Stem Cell Research Centers. Each institution is receiving $10 million.

Atrium Health

$10 million to the Foundation for the Carolinas for the Charlotte Housing Opportunity Investment Fund, which aims to expands access to affordable housing in Mecklenburg County, N.C. In addition, Fifth Third Bank has granted $3 million to the fund.

Goldrich Family Foundation

$10 million to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to establish the Jona Goldrich Center for Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders. Goldrich was a Los Angeles real-estate developer who escaped Nazi-occupied Poland in 1942; he died in 2016.

Google.org

$6 million to 4-H to expand its Computer Science Career Pathway program to bring computer-science education to more than 1 million young people, particularly those living in rural areas.

Patterson Foundation

$5 million pledge to the Bay for operations and to transform 53 acres of waterfront into a public park in Sarasota, Fla.

Starbucks Foundation

$3.5 million to Points of Light to bolster its national-service fellowship program in 20 cities.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

$3.3 million to four recipients for their prison education and re-entry programs across the United States. The grants will be shared among the Alliance for Higher Education in Prison, California State University at Los Angeles, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and Marymount Manhattan College.

Baxter International Foundation

$2.2 million grant to Operation Smile to increase the availability of cleft-palate corrective surgery in India.

Sargent Foundation

$2 million to Bob Jones University for scholarships. The university has named part of its student center in honor of Earle and Eleanor Sargent, who established the foundation in 1953.

Luminate

$1.3 million to the Media Legal Defence Initiative for its efforts to protect freedom of the press and support independent media around the world.

New Grant Opportunity

The Pillars Fund is accepting letters of inquiry for grants to amplify the leadership and talents of American Muslims. Nonprofit organizations throughout the United States can apply for grants worth between $10,000 and $50,000 to address civil rights, wellness, and understanding of American Muslims. Letters of inquiry are due July 19.
