Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Gates Foundation Team Up for $50 Million Math Program (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$50 million over five years to the EF+Math Program to produce models, practices, tools, and other resources that aim to dramatically improve math skills for students in grades 3 through 8. Each foundation has committed $25 million.
Novo Nordisk Foundation
$27 million to North Carolina State University to sponsor an international collaborative research and training program in biomanufacturing science and technology. The Technical University of Denmark will share $9 million of the grant.
Earth Alliance
$5 million to five organizations in Brazil to protect habitats in the Amazon that have been put at risk by this summer’s destructive wildfires. The five grantees are the Instituto Associacao Floresta Protegida, Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon, Instituto Kabu, Instituto Raoni, and the Instituto Socioambiental.
Names Family Foundation
$3 million pledge to the Fircrest Pool and Community Center to build a new recreation center in Fircrest, Wash.
Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation
$2.5 million to the University of Hawaii for education programs at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Diamond Head.
Strada Education Network
$2.3 million to the National Governors Association to help state governments design education and training programs for adult learners in Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming.
Google.org
$1.5 million to the Salvation Army Golden State Division to support its services for homeless people in the San Francisco Bay Area. This grant is the first made from Google.org’s $50 million pledge in June.
Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust
$1.1 million to the University of Glasgow to evaluate the effectiveness of a solid food-based diet to improve clinical outcomes in adults and children with Crohn’s disease.
New Grant Opportunity
The Cigna Foundation is inviting proposals from nonprofit organizations working to reduce food insecurity among children through its Healthier Kids for Our Future grant program. The program will provide a total of $5 million in grants this year to community organizations that augment in-school efforts to provide food as well as nutritional education to children. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
