Charitable Support for Hospitals May Decline, Report Says

The Coming Challenges in Hospital Philanthropy, by Gary J. Hubbell, warns that community hospitals should brace for a decline in donations over the next decade. Mr. Hubbell, of the Growth Design Corporation, which works with nonprofit organizations, writes that financial competition among hospitals and growing public scrutiny of nonprofit groups, combined with a decrease in the number of people who give to charity, could make it more difficult for nonprofit hospitals to survive. To fight this trend, Mr. Hubbell recommends that hospital fund raisers and leaders “capture the idealism” of donors by emphasizing the role of nonprofit hospitals in identifying solutions to health problems, and by engaging donors in conversations about the future of health care. He also says that nonprofit hospitals would increase donations if they did a better job of explaining how they are different from their for-profit competitors.
