Charities Acted as Conduits for Lobbying Money

A report released by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee last week described in more detail how lobbyist Jack Abramoff routed clients’ money through nonprofit organizations to various lobbying campaigns, reports The Washington Post.

Mr. Abramoff pleaded guilty in January to fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to bribe public officials, prompting Commissioner Mark W. Everson, of the Internal Revenue Service, to say: “One of the most disturbing elements of this whole sordid story is the blatant misuse of charities in a scheme to peddle political influence.”
