Charities Canvass Streets for Donations

April 6, 2006

Some nonprofit groups are raising money the “old-fashioned way”—by approaching people on the street, reports the Associated Press.

Canvassers armed with clipboards and training about the charity’s mission have been heading to areas with high pedestrian traffic to give short pitches and sign up new donors. The majority of people who give this way are “younger and more technologically savvy” than other donors, says Eileen Burke, special-projects director at Save the Children. Such donors have been hard to reach through direct mail and telephone calls, she says.
