CHARITIES IN ERITREA
February 17, 2006
The government of Eritrea has asked six Italian organizations to pull out of the country, the latest sign of its escalating reluctance to receive foreign aid, Reuters reports. The east African country, one of the poorest in the world, says that the charities failed to meet regulations enacted last May that restrict their sources of funds and place requirements on size, taxes, and transparency. Eritrea has an ongoing border dispute with Ethiopia and says that international groups have not sufficiently enlisted Ethiopian cooperation in resolving the conflict.
