Charities Seek Help Protecting Donor Privacy

May 13, 2004 | Read Time: 1 minute

Epsilon, a for-profit marketing company in Wakefield, Mass., that serves many nonprofit groups has added the position of chief privacy officer to help clients ensure they are complying with new laws, such as the federal do-not-call registry and the anti-spam law.

The new privacy official, Steven Roth, previously served as the company’s vice president of customer-relationship management, strategy, and planning.

Mr. Roth says his job will be to help clients deal with privacy issues that can be unclear.

For example, “if you’re a nonprofit, you are not governed by the do-not-call registry,” he says. “So some of our not-for-profit clients say, ‘Okay, what’s the right thing to do here for our customers? Even though we could call, maybe we don’t want to,’” he says.
