The Federal Bureau of Investigation plans to seek financial and other records from three nonprofit groups established by Rep. Alan B. Mollohan, a West Virginia Democrat, reports The New York Times. The groups—the Vandalia Heritage Foundation, the Institute for Scientific Research, and the Canaan Valley Institute—are part of an investigation into whether Mr. Mollohan improperly steered federal funds to the charities.

Mr. Mollohan and leaders of the nonprofit groups have denied any wrongdoing.
