Charity Auction Offers Pope Benedict’s Volkswagen

April 4, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

A Texas casino company that bought Pope Benedict’s 1999 Volkswagen Golf two years ago is putting the car up for sale and will give the proceeds to the British arm of Habitat for Humanity, reports Reuters.

Golden Palace Casino bought the car in 2005 for $250,000 from a 21-year-old German resident, the news service reports. Bids for the car, which is for sale on eBay, topped $160,000 this week. The auction closes April 10.

The casino covered the car, which belonged to the Pope before he was Pope, with stickers and the words “Pope Benedict Mobile,” Reuters reports.
