To honor the Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro — the race horse that was euthanized earlier this week — a charity has been created to raise money for research into laminitis and other horse-related health concerns, reports the Associated Press.
Barbaro, who had a protracted and much-publicized battle with laminitis after a race injury, drew a flood of support from racing fans and animal lovers all over the nation.
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has spearheaded the new organization, named the Barbaro Memorial Fund, and will look to raise money at high-profile races. It will also use television and the sale of merchandise to promote the cause.
